1909年文献已提出神经系统最原始的控制中枢集中在延髓下部和脊髓的上部。上颈髓类似于较高级的中枢

如间脑和皮层一样

上颈髓中枢接受躯体和头区的一些感觉冲动

也接受来自孤束的一般内脏传人刺激。上颈髓与延髓脑神经核在结构上有密切的神经联系

来自头面、躯干、四肢及内脏的传入纤维都集
