Through reviewing the construction status of the basic theory of acupuncture and moxibustion discipline from the ancient to modern eras

it is believed that the structure of acupuncture and moxibustion discipline has been formed

but nowadays

the theoretical system of acupuncture and moxibustion is still on the framework of classical meridian theory

and the treatment with acupuncture and moxibustion is in reference with the mode of syndrome/pattern difference of Chinese herbal medicines. Parts of these remain ambiguity. It is proposed that the innovation of acupuncture and moxibustion discipline should focus on anatomical physiology

psychology and other multi-disciplines; and the basic framework should compose of the theoretic systems of three major disciplines

i.e. Meridians and Acupoints

Technology of Acupuncture and Moxibustion

and Treatment of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Under the premise of multidisciplinary intersection

many updated scientific research achievements should be integrated in future to boost the constant development of acupuncture and moxibustion discipline.
